A fuel oil leak from a NATO pipeline, damaged during roadwork in the western province of Kocaeli, has contaminated Maşukiye Stream before seeping into Sapanca Lake, with teams currently working to prevent the leak from spreading to the entire lake.

Sakarya, a province neighboring Istanbul, will become "Turkey's new green city" following investments as part of "green tourism" for promoting the natural heritage of the region, the mayor of the province has said.

"We are investing in many regions of the town that can be new tourism destinations of the country," Ekrem Yüce said on April 26.

Boutique hotels and detached villas in the northwestern province of Sakarya's Sapanca district, which is also called the "Backyard of Istanbul" and one of the great centers of tourist attractions, are going full with people making reservations, especially for the weekends amid the ongoing pandemic.

An abandoned fishing net in Lake Sapanca has killed at least 68 wild ducks and hundreds of fish, according to residents of Turkey's northwestern Sakarya province.

The massacre at Lake Sapanca was revealed after a couple practicing sport fishing there found them.

An explosion on a natural gas pipeline occurred and was followed by a fire in the Marmara province of Sakarya yesterday. No casualties were reported, according to the Sakarya Governor's Office.
