Sarcophagi

For the first time in its 12,000-year history, Diyarbakır, a city in southeastern Türkiye known for its UNESCO-listed ancient walls, has revealed a Roman-era sarcophagus during excavation works.

The Ministry made the following 11 selections from the magnificent sarcophagi in the country, which depict the immortal details of life, history and art.

The Roman sarcophagus was discovered in the ancient city of Sidamara

Discovered 140 years ago and taken to England from Türkiye, the Eros Head was put in its place at the Istanbul Archaeology Museum as a result of the initiatives of the Culture and Tourism Ministry.

The artifact, which was brought to Türkiye on June 10, was reunited with the historical Sidamara Sarcophagus to which it belonged.

The sarcophagus was found in Sydney Gardens, Bath

Works have been ongoing precisely in an area where a sarcophagus and many other simple-type tombs have been discovered in the southwestern province of Bodrum's Muğla district. The cover of the sarcophagus, which includes 2,400-year-old historical artifacts, was opened by the Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy last week.

The Roman sarcophagus of Hercules, which recently returned to Turkey from Switzerland after it had been smuggled abroad some 50 years ago, has begun welcoming visitors at its home in the Mediterranean resort of Antalya. 

There are just days for the Roman sarcophagus of Hercules to return to its home in Turkey. The precious Roman-era sarcophagus will return to its home in the Mediterranean province of Antalya on Sept. 13, some 50 years after it was smuggled abroad.

The Roman sarcophagus of Hercules, which was ruled to return to Turkey by a Swiss court in 2015, will return to its home in Turkey in September.
