By our side, in life and in death

The oldest archaeological evidence of domesticated dog bones comprises two significant discoveries: one in Germany, dating back 14,700 years, where a dog was buried alongside a couple; and another in Israel, dating back 12,000 years, where a woman was buried with a puppy nestled under her arm, only a few months old.

Dogs do understand us, says new study

Whether dogs truly understand the words we say, as opposed to things like tone and context clues, is a question that has long perplexed owners, and so far science hasn't been able to deliver clear answers.

But a new brain wave study published on March 22 in Current Biology suggests that hearing the names of their favorite toys actually activates dogs' memories of those objects.

The battalion has been training dogs since 1963. Dogs of 12 different breeds, six of which are local, are produced and raised at the center in Bursa and receive challenging training in eight branches.

Van bears defy hibernation, raise concern among scientists

Bears in the eastern province of Van raise eyebrows among scientists as they defy their natural hibernation patterns due to global warming and the availability of food all year round, warns professor Dr. Lokman Aslan, the director of the Van YYU Wildlife Conservation and Rehabilitation Center.

Crying wolf to save livestock and their predator

Using a powerful torch, Aliki Buhayer-Mach momentarily drenches a nearby mountain top in light, straining to see if wolves are lurking in the shadows.

If the predator were to get past the electric wires stretched around this high-altitude pasture in the Swiss Alps, the 57-year-old biologist knows "it would be a massacre."

Slovenian prehistoric fauna incredibly diverse

When thinking about Slovenian animals, most would consider bees, bears and Lipizzan horses, but an exhibition of prehistoric fossil bones and teeth is adding animals such as macaque monkeys, giant hyenas and Merck's rhinos to the list.

The exhibition Early Ice Age in Slovenian Lands: New Discoveries opened on 17 June at the Notranjska Regional Museum in Postojna.
