The continued incarceration by the Albanian authorities of an ethnic Greek who was elected mayor of Himare in May is "profoundly anti-European" and risks becoming a barrier to the "Albanian people's European aspirations," European Commission Vice President for Protecting the European Way of Life Margaritis Schinas has said.

A large number of ethnic Greeks attended a demonstration on Monday staged by the Omonoia organization in the southern Albanian city of Himare, demanding the immediate release of mayor-elect Fredi Beleri. 

European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas has expressed "serious concern" over the continued incarceration by the Albanian authorities of an ethnic-Greek official who was elected mayor of Himare in May.

Bulgarian MEP Eva Maydell from GERB and the group of the European People's Party is expected to replace Mariya Gabriel in the European Commission, Politico reported.

European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Mariya Gabriel has submitted her resignation and it has been accepted by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, according to a Commission announcement. Earlier, the Commission announced that European Commissioner Gabriel is on unpaid leave.

The commitment of the European Commission to assist where necessary after the train tragedy in Tempi was expressed by the vice-president of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, in a press conference after the weekly meeting of the College of Commissioners. At the same time, he expressed everyone's "pain at the unspeakable destruction".

Vice President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas was livid over the decision of the European Intellectual Property Office to register the "turkaegean" trademark, something that in Athens provoked an official inquiry ordered by a furious Development Minister Adonis Georgiadis.

The Vice President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas and the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Kostis Hatzidakis visited the Vocational School of the Public Employment Service - D.Y.P.A. in Egaleo, on the occasion of Europe Day.

European Union Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas, responsible for coordinating migration and security policies, has held two-day long talks in Ankara, his fourth stop in a tour of partner countries key to putting a stop to the "instrumentalization of migrants by the Belarussian regime and [which] aims to further reinforce the overall cooperation on migration and security."

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu met on Nov. 18 with European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas in Turkey's capital Ankara to discuss regional issues. 

"We discussed with Schinas irregular migration issues in our region, including in Belarus," Çavuşoğlu said on Twitter.
