More than 40 people remained stranded in cable cars high above a mountain in southern Turkey on Saturday, 19 hours after one pod hit a pole and burst open, killing one person and injuring seven.

A cable car pod struck a pole and burst open in the southern city of Antalya, killing one and leaving 184 people stranded in 24 cabins, according to officials and local media. 

A search and rescue operation got underway southeast of Hydra to find a ferry passenger who fell into the sea in unclear circumstances.

The coast guard operation is focused on an area 18 nautical miles southeast of the island.

A fellow passenger on the "Kissamos," which was en route from Hania in Crete to Piraeus, raised the alert.
