BELGRADE - Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic said on Wednesday elections for the Belgrade city assembly and the remaining local polls in Serbia would be held simultaneously on June 2, in line with an opposition demand granted thanks to an appeal by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to demonstrate constructiveness so that "work can be continued after the elections."

BELGRADE - Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) leader Ivica Dacic said on Wednesday he had had a discussion with President of Serbia and Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) leader Aleksandar Vucic earlier in the day and that a continuation of the cooperation between the two parties had been agreed.

It has been our common foreign policy for 11 years now, Dacic said in a statement to Tanjug.

As meetings of city and municipal committees of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, SNS, begin throughout Serbia, some SNS boards have voted to dismiss Defence Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic, until recently one of the closest allies of Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic.

In 2017, when Ana Brnabic became not only Serbia's first female prime minister but its first openly gay head of government, the world marvelled at how such a conservative Balkan country could make such a progressive step.

In Serbia, however, few shared in the enthusiasm.
