Pakistan reported 300 of its Citizens Killed in the Migrant Ship off Greece

Pakistan has reported around 300 of its citizens who died when a ship carrying illegal migrants from Libya to Europe capsized last week.

"Senate President Sadiq Sanjrani deeply mourns the tragic loss of nearly 300 Pakistanis following a boat accident off the coast of Greece," Sanjrani's office said in a tweet, as quoted by Russia's Interfax news agency on Monday.

Migrants rescued from boat found off Kalymnos

Sixty-eight migrants found on Monday on a sailboat northwest of the coast of the small island of Leros, in southeastern Greece, were rescued and transferred to the island, state-run broadcaster ERT reported.

The migrants were picked up by a merchant ship that was sailing nearby and then by the Coast Guard that transferred them to Leros.

In one of the greatest tragedies of its kind this year, a fishing boat carrying migrants trying to reach Europe capsized and sank off the southern coast of Greece on Wednesday, leaving at least 79 people dead and many more missing. Initial reports suggested there could have been some 500 people on board from Pakistan, Egypt and Syria.

At least 32 migrants drowned early on Wednesday when their boat capsized and sank off Greece, the country's coast guard said.

One hundred people were rescued, but it remained unclear how many were on board when the vessel went under, authorities said. The shipwreck was the deadliest off Greece this year.

Death toll from shipwreck off Pylos rises to 32

At least 32 migrants drowned and 100 were rescued after their fishing vessel capsized off the town of Pylos in southern Greece, the coast guard said on Wednesday.

A total of 104 people have been rescued so far, according to authorities who estimate that over 400 passengers were on board when the vessel sank. 

Survivors were taken to the town of Kalamata, authorities said.
