Scientists on Lesvos find 20 million year-old petrified tree
Greek scientists on the volcanic island of Lesvos say they have found a rare fossilized tree whose branches and roots are still intact after 20 million years.
The tree was found during roadwork near an ancient forest petrified millions of years ago on the eastern Mediterranean island and transported from the site using a special splint and metal platform.

The Museum of Natural History of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos has announced the discovery this week of a large and intact fossilized tree complete with its branches and roots during excavations carried out along the Kalloni-Sigri road on the eastern Aegean island.
Locusts infest western Lesvos
Swarms of locusts are plaguing the western part of Lesvos and are posing a threat to crops in Sigri, Mesotopo, Hidira and upland areas around Eressos, according to local reports on Wednesday.
Experts said locusts have always troubled the island but this year the phenomenon has intensified due to high temperatures and humidity.

New remains of fossilized forest near Lesvos roadworks
Excavations by researchers at the Natural History Museum for the Lesvos Petrified Forest took place near road works for the construction of a new road from the towns of Kalloni to Sigrio on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos. The scientists responsible for preserving other sections of the ‘Petrified Forest’ found new traces of fossilized tree trunks.
