Turkish scientists are working to start human trials of a locally developed COVID-19 vaccine by the end of January, the country's industry and technology minister has said.

An affiliate of China's state-owned drug maker Sinopharm said on Wednesday its COVID-19 vaccine showed 79.34% efficacy and it has requested regulatory approval of the shot, moving a step closer to become China's first approved vaccine for general public use.

A first batch of vaccines developed by Chinese biopharmaceutical company Sinovac has arrived in Turkey, after a two-week delay.

A plane carrying the first 3 million doses of a COVID-19 vaccine ordered from China's SinoVac Biotech arrived in the Turkish capital Ankara on Dec. 30.

Turkey has agreed to buy 50 million doses of Sinovac's CoronaVac and had expected delivery by Dec. 11, but the shipment has faced delays.

A Chinese coronavirus vaccine delivery to Turkey was postponed on Dec. 27 for "one or two days," the Turkish health minister announced.

Vaccines developed by Sinovac Biotech Ltd. and the state-owned China National Biotec Group Co. have been dispensed in the country since they were granted emergency-use authorization in July.
