Schools in Thessaly and Sporades islands to remain closed next week

The regional government of Thessaly and the Education Ministry are set to jointly announce that schools will remain closed in the region and the Sporades islands next week due to the destructive nature of storm Daniel.

A re-evaluation of the situation is expected next week to determine whether schools will open the following week.

The storm brought heavy rainfall that caused floods and landslides, and destroyed roads and bridges.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has postponed an annual economic policy speech scheduled for this weekend and will instead visit flooded areas hit by heavy rain since Monday, Reuters reported.

Disaster of biblical proportions

Three people have reportedly died as a result of the Daniel weather system which has been battering many parts of Greece for more than two days.

Two Austrian newlyweds were also believed to be missing after the holiday accommodation they were staying at was swept away on Tuesday in the Pelion region.

The torrential rain and thunder in the area did not stop for 10 hours. On the island of Skiathos, the water swept away cars, flooded houses and hotels. In the Ilia district, hail destroyed the entire crop of the farmers.
