Greece mourns fighter pilot

Greece's air force and the country at large are mourning the death of a pilot Thursday whose single-seat Mirage 2000-5 fighter jet crashed into the sea north of the central Aegean island of Skyros after returning from a mission to intercept Turkish jets.

The Hellenic Armed forces declared three days of national mourning.

Search under way for Hellenic Air Force jet which crashed off Skyros

A search was under way after a Hellenic Air Force fighter jet crashed into the sea off the coast of Skyros. 

The Mirage 2000-5 jet fell some nine miles northeast of the island which is part of the Sporades group near the central Aegean, according to a statement issued by the Hellenic Air Force. 

Turkish jets violate airspace after PM's sortie

Three Turkish military aircraft - two armed fighter jets and a CN-235 - violated Greek air space in the northeastern, central and southeastern Aegean on two occasions on Thursday.

The transgressions came just a few hours after Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras flew in a Greek F-16 fighter jet following a visit to the 110th combat wing of the Hellenic Air Force in Larissa, central Greece.

Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos on Wednesday sounded a note of defiance during visits to two Hellenic Air Force bases, on Skyros and in Thessaloniki, following a spike in Turkish violations of Greek air space over the Aegean, Ekathimerini reports.
