New sculptures join Kostanjevica open-air collection
Two new monumental pieces have been unveiled at the open-air sculpture collection in Kostanjevica na Krki in the south-east of the country to wrap up what is arguably the world's oldest still running international sculpture symposium.
Vilenica winner points to Ukraine war
Sežana – The 37th Vilenica International Literary Festival drew to a close on Saturday evening with the awarding of the Vilenica Prize to Latvian poet Amanda Aizpuriete, who was not present at the ceremony. In her thank-you speech she raised the issue of the war in Ukraine, saying thousands of soldiers, civilians and children were dying.

Poet Gail McConnell wins Vilenica Crystal
Štanjel – Northern Irish poet Gail McConnell has won the Vilenica Crystal, an award the Vilenica International Literary Festival bestows on one of the authors featured in the festival’s collection of poems or texts.

Latvian poet Amanda Aizpuriete wins Vilenica Prize
Ljubljana – Latvian poet Amanda Aizpuriete is the winner of this year’s International Vilenica Prize for Central European literature, which will be given out during the 37th Vilenica International Literary Festival in Slovenia in September. The Slovenian author in the focus will be Andrej Blatnik, the festival’s organisers told the press on Tuesday.

Škofja Loka Passion Play declared best production at drama festival
Kranj – Škofja Loka Passion Play staged by the Prešeren Theatre Kranj and directed by Jernej Lorenci received the Šeligo Prize for the best production at the 51st Week of Slovenian Drama, while also receiving the audience’s choice award and the awards for actors, as the festival concluded in Kranj on Saturday evening.
Diaspora writer Rebula honoured with bust
A bust of Alojz Rebula (1924-2018), an award-wining diaspora writer and translator, has been unveiled in front of the Church of St Helen in Loka pri Zidanem Mostu, the birth place of his wife, where he spent the last years of his life.

Epidemic cut sales, profit of Pivovarna Laško Union in 2020
Ljubljana/Laško – Pivovarna Laško Union, Slovenia’s largest brewery, last year generated EUR 145.6 million in net sales revenue, up 6.9% year-on-year, with the company attributing the drop to the Covid-19 epidemic. Net profit decreased by 31.5% to EUR 16.7 million, shows the annual report published on Wednesday.
Škofja Loka unveils plaque to mark 300 years of its passion play
Škofja Loka – Marking the 300th anniversary of the Škofja Loka Passion Play, Slovenia’s oldest completely preserved play, a plaque was unveiled in the northern medieval town of Škofja Loka on Monday.
The plaque, laid in the pavement of the town’s City Square, where the play is performed every few years, is based on the work’s spiritual, theatre, religious and educational roles.
One of Slovenia’s bestselling books gets sequel
Ljubljana – Goran Vojnović has written a sequel to his bestselling debut novel Čefurji Raus! after 13 years. Đorđić se Vrača (Đorđić Returns) is no longer a story about Slovenians and immigrants from the former Yugoslavia and their children, but about a world that is disappearing.

Petrol bomb attack on councillor’s home condemned
Ljubljana – Senior Slovenian officials have condemned Friday’s petrol bomb attack on the house of Vesna Fabjan, Kočevje local councillor for the Marjan Šarec List (LMŠ). President Borut Pahor called for tolerance and mutual respect.
