Greece seeks to plug its 'Bermuda Triangle' of lost taxes

It could be a scene from a thriller: a ghost ship abandoned in the crystal-clear bay of a Greek island, its hold crammed with millions of illegal cigarettes, the crew nowhere to be seen.

And no one knows where the freighter Amaranthus or its cargo were bound for when it beached on the island of Zanthe off the Ionian coast of western Greece in December.

Montenegrins Urged to Cut Down on Smoking

The Cancer Society of Montenegro has warned that 40 per cent of adult Montenegins still smoke, which is way above the European average.

The organization on Monday said that of a total of 478,000 Montenegrins over 18 years, almost 200,000 are smokers.

The country has the third highest smoking rate in Europe, beaten only by Turkey and Greece.

BELGRADE -- Serbia on Friday marks the National No Tobacco Day, and the Health Ministry has signaled "increased control of public smoking," said Tanjug.

It was at the same time said that "nearly 50 pct of the population are smokers and more than a half are exposed to environmental tobacco smoke."
