During the evening hours, the rain turned into a strong snowstorm, which has been going on for a long time. Bearing in mind that the snow that fell a few days ago has not melted, the height of the new white cover will reach over half a meter in some places.

Traffic on the Hemus highway in the direction of Sofia is temporarily restricted for all cars and trucks after the snow has fallen due to the need for cleaning.

Cars must be driven with chains, advised by the Road Infrastructure Agency. Drivers should drive with caution and appropriate speed.

Approximately 700 snow removal vehicles were out clearing the roads last night. All national roads are passable in winter conditions. Around 8:30 am, restrictions on the movement of heavy goods vehicles over 12 tonnes with trailers and semi-trailers across the Preval pass were lifted, said the press office of the Road Infrastructure Agency, reports Focus News Agency. 

From today, comes into force winter maintenance of the national road network. The Road Agency urges drivers who have not changed the summer tires of their winter cars to do it as soon as possible. 

The sanctions for snow removal companies are serious, they know it and I hope they will do their job well, Mayor of Sofia Yordanka Fandakova said at a press conference, Focus News Agency reports.

 Following forecasts for snow, over 110 snow removal vehicles are on standby in Sofia, said the press office of Sofia Municipality.

The snow that fell on Friday caused disruptions to traffic in several Bulgarian regions, which necessitated the introduction of temporary measures and limitations.

According to the forecast, snow is to continue to fall in most of the northern regions, while rain is expected in the southeast on Saturday, but precipitations are to decrease as of midday.
