Unemployment rate at 13.7 pct in 2019

Turkey's unemployment rate stood at 13.7 percent in 2019, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) said on March 20.

The figure marked a 2.7 percent rise compared to the previous year.

According to TÜİK, the number of unemployed aged 15 and over in Turkey reached 4.4 million last year - a rise of 932,000 compared to 2018.

The COVID-19 pandemic will dramatically increase global unemployment. Approximately 25 million people to lose their jobs, the United Nations said.

December unemployment drops to 16.3 pct, lowest since March 2011

Greece's jobless rate eased to 16.3 percent in December from 16.5 percent in the previous month, data from the country's statistics service ELSTAT showed on Thursday.

It was the lowest jobless rate since March 2011.

Seasonally adjusted data showed the number of unemployed at 758,886 people, with those aged up to 24 bearing the brunt of being out of work.

Unemployment Rate Down by 0.6 Percentage Points in Q4 2019

In the fourth quarter of 2019 there were 138.5 thousand unemployed persons, of whom 80.6 thousand (58.2%) men and 57.9 thousand (41.8%) women. The unemployment rate was 4.1%, 4.4% and 3.8% for men and women respectively. In comparison with the fourth quarter of 2018, the unemployment rate went down by 0.6 percentage points, registering the same decrease for men and women.

PM: Creating ‘well-paid jobs’ is a government priority

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Friday reiterated his pledge to focus on creating well-paid jobs to lower unemployment instead of relying on government handouts.

"Creating many well-paid jobs is a government priority," he told lawmakers, opening the debate in Parliament on labor issues.

Unemployment rate at 13.3 pct in Nov

Turkey's unemployment stood at 13.3. percent in November 2019, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) said on Feb. 10.

November's figures showed a 0.1 percentage point fall compared to October 2019, when unemployment stood at 13.4 percent.

The rate for employment dropped by 0.9 percentage points and hit 45.6 percent, almost 28.17 million people, the data showed. 

Top Turkish business body expects higher growth in 2020

Turkish economy is projected to post higher growth this year, said the head of the Turkish Industry and Business Association (TÜSİAD) on Feb. 6.  

"The components of this growth forecast are comprised of the rise in public expenditures and especially the expansion in the balance sheets of public banks," Simone Kaslowski told a regular meeting of general assembly held in Istanbul.
