According to the UN organization, the number of people facing acute food insecurity had jumped from 135 million to 276 million since 2019

8.7 million people in the country are at risk of famine

A report issued on June 10 warned that over 350,000 people in Ethiopia's Tigray province are facing famine and over 2 million are just a step away, blaming the dire situation on the ongoing conflict that has forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee, limited humanitarian access and the loss of harvests and income.

Millions around the world are already relying heavily on food aid to survive, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned.

David Beasley, head of the (WFP), said urgent action was needed to avoid a worldwide catastrophe.

The report estimates that the number of people starving could almost double - from 135 million to more than 250 million.

The U.N. and the South Sudan government say that 1.25 million people in South Sudan are facing starvation, double the number from the same time last year.
