US pulls plug on Turkish pilot F-35 training over Russian S-400 row, as threat of sanctions grows

The US military has halted a program for training Turkish pilots on the F-35 fighter jets taking place in the United States, following a warning last week from the US State Department to Ankara, giving it until July 31 to scrap a contentious deal with Russia for the S-400 missile defense system, Foreign Policy magazine reported on Tuesday.

Turkish fighter jets enter Athens FIR in the Aegean

Four Turkish F-16 and two F-4 fighter jets flying in three formations entered the Athens Flight Informational Region (FIR) on several occasions in the northeastern and southeastern Aegean on Monday.

They were chased off by Greek air force pilots in line with international rules of engagement. Two of the six fighter jets were armed.

Nearly 40 Turkish violations reported in Greek air space

Turkish fighter jets conducted a total of 39 violations of Greek air space on Good Friday, despite it being an important day on the Greek Orthodox calendar.

Sixteen Turkish jets, two of which were armed, conducted unauthorized flights over the northern, central and eastern Aegean, Greek military authorities said.

New airspace violations in the Aegean

Turkish fighter aircraft violated Greek airspace five times on Monday, a week after Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras's official visit to Turkey.

Six Turkish F-16 fighter jets and two F-4s flying in three formations, along with three CN-235 surveillance aircraft and two helicopters entered Greek airspace in the northeastern, central and southeastern Aegean.
