Skiathos power linkup with mainland Greece successfully tested
A test of the submarine powerline that recently connected the island of Skiathos in the heart of the Sporades archipelago with the mainland power grid was completed successfully, Cenergy Holdings SA announced last week.
Cold snap sends temperatures plunging in northern Greece
A cold snap that swept across Greece in the early hours of Tuesday sent temperatures in the north of the country plunging to -8 degrees Celsius in Florina and -4 in Kozani, the National Observatory's Meteo weather service reported.
Greece, US and France hold joint military drills
French amphibious assault ship Dixmude, which serves as a helicopter carrier, is seen through the yawning hatch of a Hellenic Army Chinook after takeoff during a joint Greek-US-French military exercise on the Aegean island of Skyros on Friday. Troops were simulating the operation of recapturing a Greek island from enemy forces.

As temperatures plummet, snow covers mountainous regions in Greece
The regional authorities of Achaia, western Greece, were urging drivers on Thursday to use snow chains if travelling near the area of Kalavryta, as a cold front brought freezing temperatures around the country.
State-run news agency ANA-MPA reported that snow chains were required when travelling from Kalavryta to Diakopto, Patras and Halandritsa.
More storms on the way, weather service warns
Greece's national weather service, EMY, issued a storm warning on Sunday, saying that strong downpours with lighting and the possibility of hail would be affecting many parts of the country on Monday and Tuesday.

Husband accidentally runs over, kills wife on Skiathos
Authorities say a man accidentally ran over and killed his wife in the driveway of their home on the island of Skiathos, in the Sporades cluster.
The accident occurred at around 3 a.m. on Wednesday as the couple, both British nationals, were returning from a night out, during which they had reportedly consumed large amounts of alcohol.
Probe into Skiathos speedboat death
A 64-year-old teacher and amateur spearfisher was fatally injured on Friday after being hit by a speedboat off the coast of Skiathos, authorities said on Saturday as they detained the captain of the boat for questioning.

Half Marathon | Skyros | June 22
Hiking and nature appreciation club Rediscover Skyros and the island's municipal authority are organizing a half marathon on Saturday, June 22. The beautiful route starts from the main square of Skyros Town and participants can pick a distance that suits them - 5, 10 or 21 kilometers. A 1,300-meter event for children has also been organized.

Skiathos volunteers clean island beaches ahead of summer season
The Sporadic island of Skiathos has prepared itself ahead of upcoming tourist season with a voluntary beach cleaning drive that involved more than 550 school pupils and 75 adult volunteers.
The drive was organized by the cultural association "Skiathos" earlier this month with the aim being to clean all of the islands 72 beaches, including the signature Koukounaries beach.
