July 23, I was visiting my friend in Rafina, at her beautiful house on a steep cliff above the water in Kokkino Limanaki, a semicircular canyon created by cliffs lined with pines and houses looking down.

New service links Thessaloniki, Sporades, Volos
The Superspeed and Supercat vessels will begin services on Friday linking the Sporades chain of islands in the central Aegean with the northern port city of Thessaloniki.
The daily routes will link the town of Volos on the mainland with Thessaloniki, via the islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonisos and Skiathos.

Greeks seek affordable holiday destinations
The rise in hotel prices at popular holiday destinations such as Myconos and Santorini is turning Greeks to alternative options again this summer. The average length of their vacations remains rather short as most disposable incomes are still particularly low, according to a survey and analysis by the Trivago website reflecting Greeks' online searches for this summer.

Crews begin operation to recover fighter jet wreckage
A recovery operation to retrieve the wreckage of the Mirage jet that went down near the island of Skyros on April 12 got underway off the coast of the island on Friday, as the strong winds which had delayed the operation subsided.

Hellenic Navy divers last Saturday located at a depth of 800 meters north of the island signals from the jet's flight recorder.

Greek flag put on Aegean islets in 'honor' of dead airman
One of three young men who took the initiative to place Greek flags on five islets around Fournoi in the southeast Aegean said that the move was intended to pay tribute to Hellenic Air Force Captain Giorgos Baltadoros, who was killed last week when his jet went down off Skyros.

Tsipras: 'We lost a great pilot'
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Thursday paid tribute to the Greek air force pilot who was killed when his Mirage 2000-5 crashed into the central Aegean shortly before landing on the island of Skyros earlier in the day.

Search under way for Hellenic Air Force jet which crashed off Skyros
A search was under way after a Hellenic Air Force fighter jet crashed into the sea off the coast of Skyros.
The Mirage 2000-5 jet fell some nine miles northeast of the island which is part of the Sporades group near the central Aegean, according to a statement issued by the Hellenic Air Force.
Weather warning issued for eastern parts of the country
The national weather service EMY on Friday warned of strong storms and showers in eastern parts of the country over the weekend, particularly in the eastern mainland, the islands of the Sporades and Evia.
The wet and windy weather will spread across the Aegean on Saturday evening, hitting the islands and making sailing particularly treacherous, EMY said.
