US lawmakers query firms over Uyghur rights concerns

Multiple groups of U.S. lawmakers have sought reassurances this week about clothing giant Shein and other brands facing allegations their products use forced Chinese labor or material from regions where such conditions allegedly occur.

On May 2, a group of lawmakers sent letters to the CEOs of Adidas, Nike, Shein and Chinese shopping app Temu with questions about their supply chains.

Nike profits down on higher costs

Nike reported better than expected earnings on March 21 in its latest quarter, supported by strong demand although higher inventory and logistics costs weighed on its margins.

The company reported profits of $1.2 billion for the three months ending February, down 11 percent from the year-ago period, while revenues picked up 14 percent to $12.4 billion.

Woman invents ‘assistant glasses’ for visually impaired

A 25-year-old Turkish woman has invented special glasses, named "assistant glasses," that help visually impaired people to "recognize" people or "identify" objects.

Graduated from the U.S. Brown College, Melis Gökalp, who is working in an international digital health systems company, had written the software of the assistant glasses between 2019 and 2021.

China lockdowns weigh on Adidas’s first-quarter profit

German sportswear heavyweight Adidas on Friday reported a drop in its profits in the first quarter, as widespread coronavirus lockdowns hurt business in key market China.    

The group's net profit from its continuing operations fell to 310 million euros ($326 million), from 502 million euros in the same quarter last year.
