Police clear anarchist squats in Athens

A large police operation to evacuate three buildings in the central Athens district of Koukaki squatted by self-styled anarchists got underway on Wednesday morning.
Officers entered the buildings, located on the streets of Matrozou, Panaitoliou and Arvali, at 7 a.m.
Reports said two people were detained during the operation.

Police clear fourth squat in Exarcheia

More than 100 refugees and migrants were evicted by police from a building in the Exarchia district, central Athens, on Tuesday morning, the state-run news agency ANA-MPA reported.

The squat, known as "Clandestina" and located on Bouboulinas 42 street, had been evacuated again back in April this year. A few days later, the squatters returned.

University building defaced by vandals

The authorities' decision to evacuate a building owned by the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) in central Athens that had been occupied by squatters for about 13 years on Saturday has sparked clashes between riot police and self-styled anarchists who use the campus as a base from which to launch attacks.

A large police operation to evacuate a building in downtown Athens squatted mostly by migrant families got underway on Thursday morning, state-run news agency ANA-MPA reported.

Officers entered the building, located at the junction of Sourmeli, Acharnon and Mayer, near Vathi square, shortly after 6 a.m. 

Police to establish discreet presence in Exarchia

The police intend to continue conducting sweeps in the downtown Athens district of Exarchia and to establish a more permanent presence there in a bid to tackle lawlessness in the area.
"Our aim is to make our presence felt without creating the impression of a neighborhood dominated by police," a Citizens' Protection Ministry official told Kathimerini.
