European Court Fines Serbia for Police Beating of Cannabis Suspect

The European Court of Human Rights ruled in a decision published on Tuesday that Serbian citizen Aleksandar Zlicic was subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment at a police station in the city of Novi Sad after he and his friend were arrested in 2014 for allegedly possessing cannabis.

Number of Migrants Seeking Protection in Bulgaria Dropped Further in December

The number of migrants seeking protection from Bulgaria dipped to 815 people in December of last year, nearly half the figure of the previous month, recent data shows.

As many as 1755 people took the step in November, according to data from the State Agency for Refugees.

In December, the applicants were from 17 different countries, but also included stateless persons.

Fewer Migrants Applied for Status in Bulgaria Last Month

The number of migrants seeking protection from Bulgaria is 1755 for October 2016, according to data from the State Agency for Refugees.

The agency's latest figure is much lower compared to data for October, when 2526 migrants applied for international protection.

The applicants were from 15 different countries, but included stateless persons.
