Opposition leaders warn against another snap election

Both top opposition leaders, center-right New Democracy’s (ND) president Vangelis Meimarakis and centrist Potami party leader Stavros Theodorakis warned this week against snap elections in the country.
Crisis-plagued Greece last held elections in January, with leftist SYRIZA taking power in a coalition with the rightist-populist Independent Greeks’ (AN.EL) party.

Juncker refers to 35 bln euros ready for ‘direct injection’ into Greek economy

Centrist Potami (River) leader Stavros Theodorakis was received in Brussels on Friday by EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker for a nearly two-hour meeting.

In statements afterwards, Theodorakis told reporters that Juncker believes the last Greek proposal is a “sufficient basis for negotiations”.

Political percolation within the Greek opposition appeared to pick this week amid the increasingly frustrating “last stretch” negotiations between Athens and its institutional creditors, as well as a budding pro-Europe movement that has recently emerged on the pavement.

To Potami pledges to back loan

Greece's fourth-largest party, pro-EU To Potami, on Thursday pledged to back a new deal between the country and its creditors that could face a rocky ride through parliament.

"Whichever agreement comes to parliament, all To Potami lawmakers will vote for it, without haggling, because the country needs oxygen," party leader Stavros Theodorakis told Skai TV.
