Construction of Balkans' Longest Tunnel between Sofia and Burgas Starts in Bulgaria

Bulgaria has begun construction of the longest tunnel in the Balkans, as part of the railway between Sofia and the Bulgarian Black Sea city of Bourgas.

The tunnel is located about 30 kilometres from Sofia in a mountainous area and is 6.8 kilometres long, making it twice as long as Bulgaria's current longest tunnel, in Koznitsa.

Traffic on Struma Motorway Expected to be Allowed Partially from Friday

Traffic on the Struma motorway in the direction to Sofia is expected to be allowed partially from today, the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) said on August 23. The traffic will be reopened for cars. First, it will be examined how much weight the fire-damaged viaduct near Dupnica can withstand.

Restoration of the Viaduct of Struma Motorway Will Cost BGN 1.86 million

The repair and restoration of the viaduct from Struma Motorway near Dupnitsa, which was damaged by the fire on August 13, will continue for four months, said Road Infrastructure Agency Manager Georgi Terziyski, who is inspecting the course of clearing the terrain under the bridge.

Section of Struma Highway will Remain Closed to Traffic for at Least 3 Weeks

Struma motorway will be fully open to traffic within three weeks at the earliest, the Road Infrastructure Agency said on August 15. The stretch near Dupnitsa remained closed as a result of the huge fire at a secondary raw material facility in the area. It is unclear how much the repair will cost after the damages caused by the fire on the motorway bridge structure.
