Five people have drowned while swimming in the last 24 hours, the coast guard has said.

On Thursday evening, a 75-year-old man was removed unconscious from the sea in Vrachati, Corinthia. He was transferred to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

More than 12,000 lightning strikes were recorded across the country by midday Thursday, according to the National Observatory of Athens' Zeus lightning detection network. Forecasts for bad weather with intense lightning activity had been made since the beginning of the week.

From yesterday afternoon at 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. today, 44 fires have occurred, of which 33 were immediately treated at their initial stage, while firefighters are treating 11 more.

A significant mobilization of firefighting forces is underway in Fthiotida, southeastern Thessaly, to combat a blaze that ignited in a rural area.

The fire erupted in Anidro Stylida, prompting an extensive response from both ground and aerial units.

Currently, 36 firefighters, along with two teams of foot patrols and 11 vehicles, are involved in the firefighting efforts.

Vaso Stamatiou, one of the last Greek survivors of Auschwitz, has died at the age of 98. She had spent her last years in the Ecclesiastical Nursing Home of Stylida, Central Greece.

Two suspects are being questioned after a 41-year-old man died following a brawl that broke out at a Roma settlement in Pelasgia, in Greece's Fthiotida region.
Witnesses said the fight started when the two 33-year-old twin brothers accused the victim of stealing wood at the settlement. During the fight, the 41-year-old was fatally struck in the head with a pickaxe.

The mayor of the town of Stylida in central Greece, Apostolos Gletsos, allegedly head-butted, punched and kicked the deputy governor of the region of Central Greece at a public event on Saturday evening.
