The state has the necessary tools and power to fight against lawlessness. What was missing? Obviously the political will to do so, at all levels, and government officials who are not tempted by easy money and are not afraid.

The state is looking to execute demolition orders on the popular island of Mykonos which were finalized in previous years.
Given that the cases of the Principote and Nammos beach restaurants do not seem to lend themselves to immediate bulldozing, attention is turning to older cases.

Body found in port of Ermoupolis
The body of a man was found in the port of Ermoupolis on the island of Syros on Monday. According to information available to Kathimerini, it is a middle-aged man. The body was retrieved by a Hellenic Coast Guard vessel after an operation by divers.

For those of us who spent our summers on Mykonos in the 1980s and 90s, the sight of the Principote club and restaurant on Panormos Beach is nothing short of shocking: a sprawling installation of sofas, cushions emblazoned with gold crowns and, at one point, even carpets on a gorgeous beach where once there was nothing, no loungers nor even umbrellas.

Airbnbs mushroom in Sitia, Crete
The Municipality of Sitia, in the easternmost part of Crete, has seen its Airbnb listings grow recently, with a survey by Tourix showing that by end-March the area east of Agios Nikolaos and Ierapetra hosted 783 listed accommodation facilities, up 7.11% from March 2022, able to host up to 3,297 guests simultaneously.
