Australia’s deputy PM calls for sugar tax on soft drinks

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce has called for a sugar tax on soft drinks, saying that Australia’s obesity problem is due to people “sitting on their backsides” and “eating too much food.”

‘If you want to deal with being overweight,” he said, “here’s a rough suggestion: stop eating so much and do a bit of exercise.”

Lung cancer connected with high sugar intake, study suggests

A new study suggests that there is a correlation between lung cancer with increased intake of carbohydrates. The study conducted by the University of Texas under the guidance of Dr. Stephanie Melkonian of the ‘Anderson Cancer Center’  revealed that people with higher levels of sugar in their blood have 49 per cent more probability of developing lung cancer.

Lafazanis bolsters sugar industry prospects

Production Reconstruction Minister Panayiotis Lafazanis on Friday promised sugarcane producers and Hellenic Sugar Industry workers to find 31 million euros to meet their demands and prevent a halt of the industry?s operation.

He even guaranteed the immediate payment of 7 million euros owed to producers for their 2014 crop.
