Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, world number four, on Thursday advanced to the quarter-finals of the women's singles event at the 2.83-million-USD Rogers Cup WTA tournament in Toronto after defeating Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2 6-1. Halep, the reigning Wimbledon champion, prevailed in just 66 minutes over an opponent who came back after a long hiatus.

After 90 minutes of play, Jankovic lost 6-4, 5-7, 9-7 to Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, who will face compatriot Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the next round.

Bulgaria's top female tennis player Tsvetana Pironkova has prevailed against Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko in the first round of the Apia International Sydney tournament on Sunday.
Pironkova defeated Tsurenko 7-6; 6-2 to move to the second round of the tournament held in Sydney, Australia.

Jankovic in Ro16, Kuznetsova retires
ROME - Serbia's best-ranked female tennis player Jelena Jankovic is through to round of 16 at the WTA Rome Masters as her opponent Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia retired from their second-round match late on Wednesday.
Jankovic won the first set by 6-2, and led by 4-0 in the second when the Russian retired citing injury, 57 minutes into the match.

STUTTGART - Serbian tennis player Ana Ivanovic is through to quarterfinals at the WTA tournament in Stuttgart, after beating Julia Georges of Germany 2-1, in sets 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 on Thursday.
The Serbian tennis player will next take on the winner of the match between Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova and second-seeded Simona Halep of Romania.
