WWII bomb found at Syntagma Square

Bomb disposal experts shut down and evacuated a part of Syntagma Square in downtown Athens on Tuesday in order to safely remove a World War II bomb.

The bomb was discovered on the corner of Nikis and Ermou streets - across the square from Parliament - by workers with the Athens Water and Sewerage company who were digging in the area.

Traffic restrictions in central Athens for New Year celebrations

Traffic restrictions will come into effect in Athens on New Year's Eve as the capital celebrates the arrival of the new year and new decade.
Syntagma Square and all the roads around it will be closed off from 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening until the end of celebrations late into the night, which include a two-stage musical event and a New Year welcome by Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis.

Traffic disrupted in central Athens for Chinese president’s visit

Police shut down central avenues in the Greek capital on Monday morning as a two-day visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping got underway.

The road closures concern Syntagma square, the Presidential Mansion and the area around the Acropolis Hill.

The Syntagma metro station will remain closed and trains will pass through without stopping.

School parade marks 'Ochi Day' in Athens

An annual parade by school children to mark Greece's rejection of an Italian ultimatum and its entry into World War II on October 28, 1941, was underway in central Athens on Monday.

The parade, which takes place in front of the Parliament on Syntagma Square, started at 11 a.m.. Streets in the surrounding area are closed to traffic until it is finished.
