Pedestrian crossing painted for Athens Pride parade
A pedestrian crossing at Syntagma Square in central Athens has been painted with the colors of the rainbow as part of the 2018 Athens Pride parade, which will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Parliament will be lit up with the same colors later in the evening. This is the 14th year the Pride festival held in the Greek capital. [Alexandros Beltes/ANA-MPA]
Prominent Greek sculptor dies at age 87
Greek sculptor Theodoros Papadimitriou, who signed his work with his first name, died in Athens on Friday at the age of 87.
Theodoros is best known to the general public for his sculpture "Metro Clock," which graces the main concourse of the Syntagma metro station in central Athens, but also a stainless steel and bronze piece he did for the Athens Exchange called "Rising Index."

Ian McEwan | Athens | April 25 & 26
Critically acclaimed British screenwriter and novelist Ian McEwan has been invited to deliver a talk, titled "The Self: The Invention of the Literary Persona," as part of events marking Athens's stint as 2018 World Book Capital. The lecture at the Athens Concert Hall, organized with the support of the British Council, starts at 7 p.m.

Transport workers give out thousands of free tickets
Employees of the Athens Urban Transport Organization (OASA) on Friday gave out thousands of electronic tickets for free to commuters at several Athens metro stations in a campaign aimed at raising awareness about the e-cards among the Greek public.
Closed ticket barriers at Syntagma cause confusion
Many commuters seemed to balk at the sight of closed ticket barriers at Syntagma metro station, the capital's busiest, on Monday, where barriers leading to the platforms were activated from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the first time.

Probe into lawlessness as inmate to be moved

Folk dancers celebrate Carnival in downtown Athens
Dancers dressed in traditional Greek costumes stand on a stage at Syntagma Square in central Athens, on Friday. The folk group also encouraged members of the public to join in traditional dances in the square in front of Parliament, as part of a series of events being organized by the City of Athens to celebrate the Carnival period, which ends on Sunday, February 18.

In uncharted waters again
Alexis Tsipras grew into a political force inside the anti-memorandum movement and by siding with the so-called Indignant anti-austerity protesters who demonstrated in Syntagma Square in 2011. His vocal champions at the time are the same people who are putting the prime minister through the wringer today because of his position on the name talks with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
