Syrian peace process

Talks started in Geneva on Oct. 29 to activate a Syrian constitutional committee that will work on a new charter for the first time after two years of hard work to establish the group.

The first meeting of Syria's constitutional committee will take place late October in Geneva with the participation of the three members of the Astana Process, as well as world powers, the U.N.'s special envoy for Syria has announced, expressing his hopes that the meeting will pave way for a much-anticipated peaceful resolution to the eight-year civil war in the Middle Eastern country.

A joint statement by the foreign ministers of Iran, Russia and Turkey emphasized that the guarantors agreed to help convene the first session of the Syrian constitutional committee in Geneva.

A trilateral summit in Ankara between Turkey, Russia, and Iran will add new dimensions to the Astana peace process for Syria, the Turkish president said on Sept. 16.

The presidents of Turkey, Russia and Iran will come together on Sept. 16 in Ankara for the fifth summit under the Astana Process where they will discuss the recently increased tension in the Idlib province of Syria as well as attempts to start a political solution to the nine-year turmoil in the war-torn country.

Turkey's presidential spokesperson on Sept. 1 called on Russia and Iran to ensure the full implementation of the Idlib deal which was signed during the landmark 2018 Astana talks.     

The 13th round of Syria peace talks in Kazakhstan capital Nur-Sultan, formerly Astana, concluded on Aug. 2 with a decision to step up joint efforts to prevent civilian casualties in Idlib.

The 13th round of talks on Syria kicked off in the capital of Kazakhstan, Nur-Sultan, on Aug 1, with bilateral and trilateral talks between officials from Iran, Russia and Turkey - the three main Astana guarantors.

Syrian students studying in Turkey will contribute to building a society in both countries, the head of the EU delegation in Turkey said on July 4.       

Turkish and Russian defense ministers exchanged views on June 17 in a telephone call on measures needed to ensure peace, stability and a cease-fire in Syria.
