A senior U.N. envoy with a special task on reporting about whether there is ground for a new initiative to resolve the decades-old Cyprus problem has held talks with senior Turkish officials in Ankara, including Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

Türkiye and Turkish Cypriot forces have carried out their 19th annual joint search and rescue exercise near the Saint Hilarion Castle on the Kyrenia mountain range.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu on June 13 said any negotiations for the Cyprus dispute need a two-state solution.

The Turkish foreign minister on Sept. 19 separately met with Turkish Cypriot and Indonesian counterparts in New York on the sidelines of the 76th session of the U.N. General Assembly.

"Ahead of #UNGA76 meetings, consulted as usual w/my brother FM Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu of #TRNC," Minsiter Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said on Twitter.

The informal 5+1 Cyprus talks in Geneva are a turning point for northern Cypriots, the foreign minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said on May 12. 

The presence of U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at high-level talks to reunify the divided island of Cyprus offered a glimmer of hope that an impasse preventing a peace deal could be overcome, officials said on June 30.

However, when asked if rival sides had reached any common ground, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Çavuşoğlu said "not yet."

Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has stressed the importance of the guarantees system and emphasized that the Turkish side will not accept pre-conditions voiced by Greek Cyprus ahead of the crucial upcoming meeting in Crans-Montana in Switzerland on June 28.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu will visit Turkish Cyprus on Feb. 20-21, as peace talks on the divided island hit a snag following the Greek Cypriot Parliament's decision to celebrate a 1950 referendum aimed at unification with Greece.

The Turkish Cypriot leadership is engaging in intense consultations in Ankara to flesh out a joint position before Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akıncı and President Nicos Anastasiades present their respective maps for a settlement in Cyprus. 

The foreign minister of the Turkish Cypriot government has expressed his doubts that the ongoing Cyprus peace negotiations would yield a mutually acceptable result for both of the communities on the divided eastern Mediterranean island.
