Minors arrested after violent incident in Thessaloniki

Four minors were arrested in the northern port city of Thessaloniki following another violent incident. 

On Friday night, outside a health store in the Thermi area, the minors, along with unknown accomplices, assaulted two individuals aged 17 and 19, causing them physical injuries. 

The 19-year-old was transported by ambulance to a city hospital for precautionary treatment. 

Two difficult farewells

In what was a difficult day for Greece, 31-year-old riot police officer, Giorgos Lyggeridis, who died on Wednesday after being injured outside a volleyball arena by a flare fired by a hooligan on December 7, and 40-year-old pilot Epaminondas Kosteas, whose T-2 aircraft crashed this week, were laid to rest on Friday.

Self-styled ‘monk’ charged in Thessaloniki dog attacks

A 50-year-old man, who has declared he is a monk living in a cell on Mount Athos, was prosecuted on Monday for the felony of abusing animals following his arrest, after a complaint that he attacked stray dogs with a knife in Thermi, a suburb of Thessaloniki.

The defendant, a Serbian national, appeared before a judicial investigator in the northern port city.

Fugitive horses cause chaos on Thessaloniki highway

Two horses caused traffic disruptions on Thursday after they began galloping on the highway connecting Moudania and Thessaloniki in northern Greece near the Thermi bridge.

The Thessaloniki Traffic Police responded immediately and arrived on the scene to regulate traffic while also ensuring the safety of drivers and that the horses were collected by their owner.

Thessaloniki: Retired teacher arrested for lewd acts on minor

A retired teacher in Thessaloniki is expected to appear before a prosecutor on charges of performing a lewd act on a minor to whom he was giving private lessons.

Police in the Thermi district of the northern city arrested the 72-year-old male after his student, a 14-year-old girl, and her mother filed a complaint.

Elderly man reports robbery of 800 gold sovereigns on Christmas Day

Police in Thessaloniki on Friday were investigating the burglary on Christmas Day of an elderly man's home in the district of Thermi during which the robbers allegedly made off with 800 gold sovereigns. 

According to the account given by the 72-year-old, the assailants broke into his home through the balcony door and stole jewelry as well as the gold sovereigns.

Race continues for second place in Thessaloniki mayoral runoff

With just over 60 percent of votes counted on Monday morning, the conservative New Democracy-backed candidate for Thessaloniki mayor Nikos Tachiaos was projected to secure 22.56 percent while Constantinos Zervas and Giorgos Orphanos fought it out for second place with 14.76 percent and 14.41 percent respectively ahead of the runoff next weekend.
