Eighteen years after construction began on the Thessaloniki Metro, the subway system of Greece's northern port city is finally set to open to the public on November 30. However, a significant issue remains unresolved: ticketing.

The major project of the main line of Thessaloniki Metro is now in the final stages of being delivered to the Greek State, as the management of AKTOR, a subsidiary of Intrakat Group, noted today in the presence of the political leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the management of Hellenic Metro.

Following decades of delays, the main line of the Thessaloniki Metro will definitely start operating in November, Ministry of Infrastructure officials said Tuesday.

But the extension to the suburb of Kalamaria will be further delayed and will not open until the end of 2025, they said.

During the event, the tool supporting this strategy, the digital platform erga.gov.gr, was introduced. For the first time, significant projects implemented by both the central government and local authorities are recorded, allowing for continuous and transparent monitoring.

On November 30, 2024, the Thessaloniki Metro will be delivered to the people of Thessaloniki, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced during his speech at the event titled: “National Strategy for Regional Development / Presentation of the Digital Platform erga.gov.gr.”
