Defying Covid Crisis: Over Half of Bulgarian Companies Will Pay Christmas Bonuses to Staff

Because of the pandemic, fewer companies will hand out Christmas bonuses to their employees this year. The incentive pay will range from BGN 200 to BGN 1000, according to a study of the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), Bulgarian National Radio reported.

Net nominal average salary up 5pct in December 2019, to 3,340 lei

The net nominal average salary was 3,340 lei in December 2019, up from the previous month by 161 lei (+5.1pct), and the highest values were recorded in activities of services in information technology (including IT services, namely 7,689 lei, according to the data published on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Easter bonus must be paid by Wednesday

By Wednesday, April 24, all salary workers in the private sector should have been paid their Easter bonus, according to law. This payment is roughly half the amount of the Christmas bonus. As the Labor Ministry clarified on Friday, the holiday bonuses cannot be replaced by commodities and can only be in cash of credit.

More than 60% of the Companies will Give out Bonuses for Christmas

About 64% of employers plan to offer Christmas bonuses to their employees, 21% will not provide such bonuses, and 15% have not yet decided. This shows a poll conducted among members of the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI).

The consultation was carried out between 22-29 November 2017.
