Turkish authorities’ denial of religious service at historic monastery sparks criticism

Greek diplomatic sources have expressed criticism regarding the decision made by Turkish authorities to refuse permission for the celebration of the August 15 feast day at the former Orthodox Christian Sumela Monastery, located in the mountainous Trabzon region known to Greeks as Trapezounta.

Temperatures to drop throughout Türkiye once again

After a brief period of sunshine and warm weather, the temperature in the northern and central parts of the country is likely to decline again starting April 26, with particularly western provinces of Türkiye to witness a sharp temperature drop, the Turkish State Meteorology Service has announced.

Precipitation will continue to stay in effect throughout the week in the country.

Meteorologists warn of torrential rain in northern provinces

The Turkish State Meteorological Service has issued a torrential rain warning for the northern provinces and has declared "yellow" and "orange" alerts for Giresun, Trabzon, Rize and Artvin.

According to the bureau's latest weather report, torrential rains are expected especially in Marmara and Black Sea regions.

African workers supersede Georgians in tea picking

Workers from African countries, who filled the void to pick tea in the northern province of Rize last year after the border was sealed for Georgian workers due to the coronavirus pandemic, have lent a hand to Turkish tea plantation owners this year too.

Workers from Gambia, Senegal, Sudan and Zambia, residing in Turkey with work permits, flocked to Rize to pick tea.

Sümela Monastery reopens after rock is secured

Following 6-months of work to secure some 360 tons of rock mass to the hillside, the Sümela Monastery in the Black Sea province of Trabzon has been opened on May 1.

The monastery, which has been on UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List since 2000, stands carved into the steep cliffside of the mountain 300 meters above the picturesque Altındere Valley.
