Significant drop in serious road accidents in 2021, increase in number of people deceased

The spokesperson of the Romanian Police, Georgian Dragan, said on Wednesday that in the first seven months of 2021 the number of serious road accidents dropped significantly, yet the number of persons deceased is slightly higher than in previous years.

Over 20 injured in 24-vehicle pileup in İzmit

A multiple-vehicle collision involving as many as 24 vehicles on a busy highway in the northwestern province of İzmit near Istanbul left at least 21 people injured on May 31. 

The accident occurred at around 5 a.m. when a truck driver heading toward Istanbul lost control of his vehicle, which rolled over on the Anadolu highway.

Bulgaria: Bad Road Accident, 3 Dead

A total of three victims died after the accident on the highway "Trakia" at 356 km in the direction of Sofia-Burgas, said the press center of the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior in the seaside town.

The incident happened around 20.30 this evening after the highway exit Balgarovo.

‘Speed, safety cannot coexist,’ say transport experts

Road deaths have been on the decline over the last decade but experts insist there is still "a long way to go" for Greek drivers in terms of safety. 

The latest official figures for 2010-19 show deaths fell by 45%, while road accidents dropped by 29%. The annual number of road deaths was reduced to 694 in 2019 from 1,258 in 2010.

Nearly 2,200 people killed in road accidents in 2020

Nearly 2,200 people were killed and more than 228,000 others were injured in road accidents in 2020, declining from the previous year as vehicle and human mobility dropped due to COVID-19 related measures.

According to data from the traffic department of the General Directorate of Security, a total of 2,197 people lost their lives while 228,565 were injured in 365,000 road accidents.
