Chinese community in Greece closes ranks to help cancer patient

The Chinese expat community in Greece has come together to help a 22-year-old man from China suffering from acute leukaemia, while his father is also terminally ill with cancer.

Lin Qinglin, the 22-year-old hailing from Fujian, is in serious condition and his treatment requires repeated blood transfusions.

MPs call for blood donation to Red Crescent

Many lawmakers from several political parties have made a joint call for blood donations to the Turkish Red Crescent, as the blood stocks have recently fallen below the critical level.

Though the country needs an average of 10,000 units of blood per day, blood donation has decreased by half amid the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and the recent quake disaster.

National blood stocks drop to below critical level

The national blood stock has fallen below the minimum level due to the devastating earthquakes in February, an official from the Turkish Red Crescent has said, warning that only a three-day blood stock is left.

Announcing that the blood supply in the country is decreasing at a critical level, Saim Kerman called on citizens to donate blood.

Ban on blood donation based on sexual orientation to be lifted

Ljubljana – The permanent ban on blood donation based solely on the personal circumstances of gender and sexual orientation will be abolished on 1 July, an expert group for transfusion medicine and infectious diseases has decided after the equality ombudsman raised the issue last December.

Ban on blood donation for homosexual men found discriminatory

Ljubljana – Equal Opportunities Ombudsman Miha Lobnik has noted that the permanent ban on blood donations for all homosexual men is discriminatory, as they are excluded from taking part in this important philanthropic activity despite the fact that the safety of blood donations is also ensured by additional testing for viruses.
