A new law offering stronger protection to those who reveal abuses and corruption goes into effect in Serbia this week.

So far whistleblowers have had only administrative protection from the Anti-corruption Agency, but now they are entitled to court protection if they seek re-employment having been dismissed for reporting corruption, for example.

BELGRADE - The non-governmental organisation Transparency Serbia (TS) has commented on the first year of the current government's term in office by saying that the anti-corruption reforms are lagging behind schedule, and that some important issues related to the battle against corruption have not been addressed properly.

Transparency International has criticized a vote in Turkey's parliament that rejected motions to send four former ministers implicated in a vast corruption scandal to trial by the country's highest court.
     

Transparency International, the global coalition against corruption, dropped Turkey 11 places in its recently published "Corruption Perceptions Index 2014."

The government is set to complete a detailed reform package to increase economic transparency in Turkey, Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan has told a group of economy reporters ahead of his visit to the United States.

According to the index published by the Berlin-based watchdog on Wednesday, Albania and Kosovo are ranked joint 110th out of 174 countries around the world that were assessed in the report.

Greece scored 43 out of 100 points on the perception of corruption scale published by Berlin-based NGO Transparency International on Wednesday, but showing that it has made some progress from last year when it scored 40 points.

BELGRADE - At 41, Serbia's score in the Transparency International's (TI) Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) for 2014 saw a slight fall, and ranked 78th among 175 countries, Serbia is still a highly corrupt country, Transparency Serbia (TS), TI's national chapter in the country, told a press conference in Belgrade Wednesday.

BELGRADE -- At 41, Serbia's score in the Transparency International's (TI) Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) for 2014 "saw a slight fall," Tanjug reported.

In 2014 Bulgaria ranks lowest in the group of EU and western European countries in the annual corruption perceptions index published on Wednesday by Transparency International.
