Transport in Thessaloniki

January posted an increase in air passengers amounting to 5.4 percent from the same month in 2019, reaching a total of 2.25 million for all the country's airports, according to official figures by the Civil Aviation Authority.
This means that in the first month of the year there were 114,844 more passengers than a year earlier.

The Thessaloniki Urban Transport Organization (OASTH) is to hold talks on Monday with representatives of the privately run intercity bus service (KTEL) in a bid to tackle a serious bus shortage in the northern port city.

A flight from Athens to Thessaloniki was delayed by two hours on Thursday due to low visibility at the northern port city's international airport, state-run news agency ANA-MPA reported.

Greece's National Meteorological Service (EMY) said fog at the airport limits visibility to 100 meters creating problems for landing aircraft. It expects visibility to gradually improve after 10 a.m.

Greece's Central Archaeological Council (KAS) on Thursday decided to remove the antiquities unearthed during excavation work for the Thessaloniki metro, as Attiko Metro told KAS in a report obtained by Kathimerini that the original plan to keep the artifacts in situ was not reliable. 

After a lengthy meeting that went on until Thursday morning, the Culture Ministry's Central Archaeological Council (KAS) decided to remove the antiquities unearthed during excavation work for the Thessaloniki metro.

Fraport Greece is considering implementing additional non-obligatory investments at Thessaloniki's Makedonia Airport, including the construction and operation of a hotel. The German-Greek consortium has completed most of the initial 450-million-euro investment program in the 14 regional airports it operates.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis pledged on Tuesday that the long-delayed Thessaloniki metro will be up and running in April 2023.

After two meetings with local officials at the Ministry of Macedonia-Thrace, he said he was pleased that timetables are being kept, adding that the problems with the city's public transport will improve at the start of 2020. 

A group of anarchists protested Turkey's incursion into Syrian territory in front of the check-in desk of Turkish Airlines, inside Thessaloniki's Makedonia international airport on Thursday afternoon.
The protesters entered the airport departures area shortly after 5 p.m., unfurled a banner and shouted slogans against Turkey's action for about 20 minutes, according to local media.

A KTEL Intercity bus crashed into a metal barrier on the eastbound lane of the Thessaloniki-Edessa highway on Tuesday, injuring at least 12 people.

According to initial reports citing the EKAV ambulance service, nine women and three men ranging in age from 19 to 67 are being treated at two local hospitals for a range of breaks, bruises and more minor injuries.

Ellaktor, the construction group that is building the Thessaloniki metro, has openly contradicted operator Attiko Metro's assertion that the often-delayed project is nearing its final stages and that the main line will open in 2020.
