Migrant, refugee arrivals spike in Evros
Despite plummeting temperatures, arrivals of migrants from Turkey through the Evros border region in northeastern Greece are at a high level for the time of the year, as smugglers are reportedly constantly finding new entry routes.
Some 870 migrants were arrested for illegally entering the country in December 2018. The number of arrests in December 2017 was 502.

Police seize more than 76 kilos of hashish in Evros
Police in the border region of Evros, northeastern Greece, said on Monday they seized more than 76 kilograms of unprocessed hashish in a Sunday night raid.
Two foreign nationals, aged 25 and 17, were arrested as they tried to transport the drugs across the Evros River to Turkey aboard a plastic dinghy.
Four arrested after entering forbidden area near Turkish border
Four Turkish nationals appeared Friday before a prosecutor in Orestiada, northeastern Greece, after being arrested Thursday in a forbidden military area in Evros, the river border separating Greece from Turkey.

Greek authorities say hundreds of refugees and other migrants have crossed the land border with Turkey in the past two days, with illegal crossings in the area increasing significantly following Turkey's military operation in northern Syria.
Man killed by train in northern Greece
An unidentified man aged 51 died after being hit by a train near Orestiada, in northern Greece, on Sunday.
The passenger train was in service on the route between Alexandroupoli and Dikaia. The man died at the scene.
The incident is under investigation.

Flooding in Evros under partial control but danger not averted
The level of Evros River in northern Greece dropped to 5.80 meters on Tuesday after several days above 6 meters, though it is still not below the danger level of 5.70 meters, civil protection authorities in northern Greece said, as a new wave of rain is expected on Tuesday night and Wednesday.
Heavy rainfall leads to serious flooding in Evros
Regional and local authorities in the prefecture of Evros were on standby on Thursday after heavy rainfall resulted in serious flooding in many parts.
The villages of Elia and Avdella were particularly badly hit, with dozens of homes flooded.
The rainfall also led to the Evros River exceeding its safety level.
