7.2 magnitude quake strikes off Central America coast

BELGRADE - A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the Pacific coast of Central America. It was felt in several countries across the region. The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning.

"Hazardous" tsumani waves are possible within 300km of the quake epicenter along the coasts of Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras, the Center specified.

Magnitude-7.8 earthquake rocks New Zealand

A powerful earthquake struck hours ago in New Zealand near the city of Christchurch, with strong tremors causing damage to buildings in the capital, Wellington, over 200 kilometers (120 miles) away.

Authorities have issued a tsunami warning, urging people near the coast of the South Island to move to “higher ground.”

A powerful earthquake struck New Zealand's South Island on Nov. 13.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude-7.8 quake hit just after midnight, some 95 kilometers (59 miles) from Christchurch.

The Civil Defense Ministry has warned people on the east coast of the South Island including the capital Wellington to move to higher ground after they issued a tsunami warning.

The Meteorological Agency said the earthquake occurred Friday at 2:10 p.m. (0510 GMT) in Japan’s western prefecture of Tottori, about 700 kilometers (430 miles) west of Tokyo, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) underground.

5.3 earthquake hits Japan

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.3 shook eastern Japan on Thursday but there were no immediate reports of damage and a tsunami warning was not issued.

The epicentre of the earthquake, which occurred at 11:50 a.m. (0250 GMT), was in Chiba prefecture, east of Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

6.5 magnitude earthquake hits Tonga in Pacific Ocean

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.4 magnitude struck 572 kilometres (355 miles) beneath the earth’s surface on Friday about 340 kilometres west of the South Pacific island nation of Tonga, the United States Geological Survey reported. There was no indication of a tsunami warning according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre. The temblor was revised down from an initial reading of 6.5.
