Turkey shoots down Russian military plane

A Russian Su-24 plane has been shot down on the border of Turkey and Syria, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.

"The Russian Su-24 warplane was downed in Syria’s territory by a Turkish F-16 fighter jet. The objective control data analysis has shown unmistakably that Turkey’s air space was not violated," the ministry said.

Turkey Downing of Russian Warplane 'Stab in the Back': Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday described the shooting down of a Russian warplane by Turkey as "a stab in the back" committed by "accomplices of terrorists".

"I understand each country has its own regional interests, and we have always respected that. But we shall never tolerate crimes like today's one," the Russian President said.

One Russian pilot killed, other returned to Russia airbase in Syria

One of two pilots aboard a Russian warplane shot down by Turkey on Nov. 24 was killed by gunfire while parachuting from the burning plane. Meanwhile, the other pilot was picked up by the Syrian Army and returned to Russia's airbase in Syria, both Russian military and Russia's ambassador to France have confirmed.

Syria rebels hit Russian helicopter: Observatory

Syrian rebels fired at a Russian helicopter forcing it to make an emergency landing in a nearby government-held area in Syria's Latakia province on Nov. 24, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

A Syrian rebel group, recipient of U.S. Tow missiles, said its fighters hit the helicopter with an anti-tank missile. 

Turkish PM: We had right to shoot down Russian plane

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu says his country "has the right to take all kinds of measures against border violations."

In a speech in Ankara, Davutoglu said on Tuesday that Turkey "will not hesitate to take all steps to protect the country’s security," and that the attack today "did not amount to an aggression against any foreign territory."

Putin: Downing of Warplane to Have Negative Consequences on Russia-Turkey Relations

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the downing of the Su-24 warplane near the Turkish-Syrian border on Tuesday will have a negative consequences on the relations between Moscow and Ankara.

Putin identified the attack as a crime and highlighted that Russia will not tolerate it, TASS news agency quotes him as saying.
