Davutoglu calls for a two-state solution in Cyprus

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has called for a two-state solution to the Cyprus problem.

Speaking during a visit to the Turkish-occupied part of the Mediterranean island, the new premier repeated the call made by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey's newly-elected President, early September. Erdogan's comments had irked officials in Athens and Nicosia.

Athens dismisses Davutoglu's invitation to tea on Cyprus

Turkey’s new Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu visited the occupied part of Cyprus on Tuesday and suggested that Greek Premier Antonis Samaras should join him there for peace talks but Athens dismissed his comment.

“If the prime minister is ready, let’s go to the south together, let’s drink tea and discuss matters,” said Davutoglu during a news conference.

Commenting about George Vassiliou, the late Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktaş said he was no different than other Greek Cypriot leaders; the only difference might have been his ability to make the nastiest remarks with a smiling face. “He is a smiling devil… No different than the others,” he said. He was wrong.

Athens condemns Erdogan comments about Cyprus

Athens reacted angrily on Monday to calls by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for a “two-state” solution to the Cyprus problem and claims that Greece is not “doing its duty” as a guarantor power, saying the comments were “disappointing” and “simply confirm Ankara’s persistence in its aggressive policy” on Cyprus.

On his second working day in office, on Sept. 1, Turkey’s new President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will make his maiden foreign trip to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Nicosia paves way for first casino

NICOSIA – Cyprus will grant its first license for a casino resort within about a year, the government said on Friday, to be built in the south of the island where gambling has been strictly prohibited. Scores of Greek Cypriots regularly cross into the north of Cyprus, a breakaway Turkish Cypriot state recognized only by Ankara and where there are several casinos.

Samaras vows to stand by Cyprus in reunification talks

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has vowed to stand by the Cypriot government in its reunification talks with Turkish-Cypriots after meeting President Nicos Anastasiades in Athens on Monday.

“Greece and Cyprus will continue until the end our peaceful common struggle to overturn the fait accompli of the Turkish occupation,” Samaras said after the talks at the Maximos Mansion.
