Biden congratulates Erdoğan on renewing his tenure

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a phone call with his U.S. counterpart, Joe Biden, late on May 29 after renewing his tenure in the runoff election.

Recep Erdogan won Turkey's first-ever runoff election and will continue as the country's president.

Just over 52% of voters voted for him. The candidate of the opposition National Alliance, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, is supported by about 48 percent of Turkish citizens. The results are for processing more than 99% of the protocols.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan thanked supporters on May 28 as the vote count has neared end, with unofficial results showing him leading in runoff.

"We will be ruling the country for the coming five years," Erdoğan told his cheering supporters from atop a bus in his home district in Istanbul. "God willing, we will be deserving of your trust."
