Car-hiring service Uber has started a petition calling on users to stand up for its right to remain active in the Bulgarian market, its website shows.

It explains[BG] the petition could send a strong message to the government demanding that it that citizens say "yes" to innovations, new regulations, and the right to choose.

Ride-sharing service Uber is not available in Bulgaria's capital Sofia as of Tuesday, October 06, after having been active since last year.

Bulgaria's Supreme Administrative Court on Monday upheld a decision of the country's anti-trust watchdog to fine two Dutch-registered online taxi-service providers a total of BGN 200,000 over unfair competition, Darik radio station reported.

The companies concerned are Uber BV and Rasier Operations BV.

Controversial app-based taxi-hailing firm Uber plans to invest $1 billion in India over the next nine months, the company's local head said in a statement emailed to AFP on July 31.

Uber, the US-based taxi sharing company, will challenge the BGN 100 000 fine imposed by Bulgaria's Commission for Protection of Competition at the Supreme Administrative Court (VAS).

Uber was fined BGN 100 000 over creating unfair competition of regular taxi drivers in Sofia.

Mexico City became the first city in Latin America to regulate Uber on July 15, announcing rules that include a 1.5 percent ride levy, a yearly permit fee and a minimum vehicle value.

Mere hours after the Commission for Protection of Competition (CPC) in Bulgaria announced that Uber will be fined by BGN 200,000, the company issued an official statement on the case.

Bulgaria's competition watchdog has ruled that Uber should pay BGN 200 000 in fines on four counts, the agency's spokesperson has announced.

The reasons cited are breaching competition rules, refusal to pay the license fees required by a company that offers transport services to passengers, and failure to cooperate with Bulgarian authorities by providing information they requested.

Uber said July 3 it was suspending its controversial low-cost UberPOP service in France, six months after it was banned and following a spate of strikes by taxi drivers.
