The government is resorting to all kinds of ways to raise its social profile ahead of the general election, using the increase in the minimum wage as its main instrument. This is because the upcoming interventions in salaries and handouts are expected to affect millions of citizens, and even middle-class households.

Coordination of Social Security Systems: Council Agrees General Approach

On 21 June 2018, the Council agreed its negotiating position (general approach) on the coordination of social security systems (revision of regulations 883/2004 and 987/2009). On the basis of this mandate, the Council Presidency will start negotiations with the European Parliament once the latter has adopted its position.

The planned amendment to the European Union directive on the coordination of member-states' social security systems is likely to result in reduced access to social handouts such as unemployment and housing benefits for hundreds of thousands of Greeks as well as millions of EU citizens who seek employment opportunities in another member-state.

From 1 January 2018, people who make their statutory healthcare contributions (for example, long-term unemployed who do not receive unemployment benefit and are not insured by the state, etc.) and are not registered as self-employed within the meaning of the Social Security Code , owed monthly BGN 20.40, the NRA reported.
