UN System Is Broken, Not Broke, Georgieva Tells Politico

Bulgaria's new UN chief nominee Kristalina Georgieva has said she is "relentless" and that makes her better placed than António Guterres, the fontrunner in the informal votes among UN Security Council members.

The remark follows her video statement in which he accepts the government's nomination.

The United Nations Security Council is set to conduct an informal vote on Monday, September 26, that is thought to be decisive in the race for the next UN Secretary General.

The ambassadors of 15 countries to the UN (the 15 ones currently in the Security Council) will be able to "encourage", "discourage" or give "no opinion" each one of the nine candidates.

Serbia's UN Candidate Wins Western Media Support

Days before the fifth vote in the UN Security Council for the post of Secretary General on September 26, Serbia's candidate, Vuk Jeremic, is winning support from important Western media outlets as the best candidate.

Despite the praise, a foreign policy expert for the Serbian newspaper Politika, Bosko Jaksic, told BIRN that Jeremic would probably not be elected.

UN Security Council Adopts Resolution on Initiating Political Transition in Syria

The United Nations (UN) Security Council adopted unanimously on Friday a resolution on initiating a process of political transition in Syria.

The resolution gave the UN an enhanced role in guiding the opposing sides to talks for a political transition, with a timetable for ceasefire, a new consitution and elections all under the auspices of the UN.

All UN Member States to Participate in Selection of Next Secretary-General

For the first time in history, all 193 member states of the United Nations (UN) will be included in the selection of the next Secretary-General, who is to succeed incumbent Ban Ki-moon in 2017.

This was announced by the President of the General Assembly, Mogens Lykketoft, at the UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday.

US to raise Iranian missile test at UN Security Council

A missile test announced by Iran over the weekend was an apparent violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution and Washington will raise it at the United Nations, the U.S. State Department said on Oct. 13. 

Iran said it tested a new precision-guided ballistic missile on Oct. 11, signaling an apparent advance in Iranian attempts to improve the accuracy of its missile arsenal.
