Akinci brushes off Varosha talk as election gimmick
Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci has suggested that Varosha, a southern suburb of Famagusta that has been fenced off and abandoned since Turkey invaded northern Cyprus, is being used as an election gimmick, adding that he supports UN-backed efforts to reopen the ghost town.

Fuat Oktay's remarks came during a meeting on the legal, political and economic aspects of reopening the abandoned town of Varosha (Maraş) -- empty for decades -- in the Turkish Cypriot city of Gazimağusa.

UN to respond to Cyprus appeal over Turkey's Varosha plans
The United Nations is expected on Wednesday to issue its response to an appeal by the Republic of Cyprus against Turkish threats to settle Varosha, the fenced off part of Famagusta.
According to Kathimerini's Cyprus edition, the UN Security Council (UNSC) is expected to issue a written statement reiterating resolutions 550 and 789 on Famagusta.
Varosha issue heads to UNSC
Nicosia will take recourse to the United Nations Security Council this week over Ankara's stated plan to develop the fenced-off town of Varosha in the region of Famagusta in northern Cyprus, which has been militarily occupied by Turkey since 1974, according to the island nation's President Nicos Anastasiades.

Pompeo warns Turkey to respect resolutions on Cyprus' Varosha
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday assured Cypriot Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides that any unilateral actions by Turkey to reopen Varosha would be against UN resolutions and would hamper any efforts to resume peace talks, state news agency ANA-MPA reported.
Cavusoglu urges restraint over tension

It was the first time a Turkish official had entered the city since it was captured by the Turkish Army on August 14, 1974.

Turkish FM says Ankara planning to open abandoned quarter of Famagusta
Ankara is planning to open the fenced-off quarter of Varosha in the Turkish-occupied "ghost town" of Famagusta in Cyprus, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavugoslu said on Thursday.
"Preparations are being made. Maras will open," he told CNN Turk in an interview, in translated comments, using the area's Turkish name.
