A record-breaking number of 43,000 runners from 100 countries headed to the city center from early on Sunday to take part in the 33rd Athens Marathon and shorter races – 35% greater than last year’s participation. Meteorological reports showed 15-degree temperatures for the morning and 20 degrees at noon.

The Athens Marathon, the Authentic Marathon, will be held on Sunday November 8, 2015. A record number of 43,000 athletes will participate in this year’s marathon.

According to race organisers, foreign participants will reach 16,000 recording a 35% increase compared with last year.

The Greek National Holiday that commemorates Greek dictator Ioannis Metaxas rejecting the Italian ultimatum for a right of passage through Greece on October 28, 1940, is typically commemorated with parades throughout Greece. Traffic blocks have been placed in major cities from early on Wednesday morning with a steady ban to traffic from 10 a.m. as well as parking bans from 6 a.m. onwards.

The military parade marking the anniversary of March 25, the Greek Independence Day, started today at 11.00 am in downtown Athens.

Traffic will be disrupted in downtown Athens on Tuesday and Wednesday to make way for celebrations marking the March 25, 1821 anniversary of Greek independence from Turkish rule.

Students all over the country will be holding their parades on Tuesday, followed by a parade of the armed forces on Wednesday at Syntagma Square.

The Central Archaeological Council (KAS) has given the City of Athens the green light to erect a bronze statue of Alexander the Great at either of two places proposed by the municipal authorities.

The statue, which depicts the ancient conqueror at an early age, was crafted by Yiannis Pappas in 1992 but has never gone on public display due to bureaucratic problems.
